Browser Use the current or one version back release of any of these, with Chrome being the most reliable for AAPC platforms overall:
- Google Chrome
- Microsoft Edge (Chromium)
- Mozilla Firefox
- Safari (macOS only)
Operating system
- Windows 10 or Windows 11 (64-bit)
- macOS 12 (Monterey) or newer
- ChromeOS is workable
Mobile devices and tablets are not recommended. The chart viewer and answer panel need real screen space.
Internet connection
- Wired or stable Wi-Fi, minimum 25 Mbps down / 5 Mbps up
- A corporate or shared connection can interfere with page loading or timeouts. If pages hang, test on a non-VPN connection before opening a support ticket.
Display
- Use a display that will allow you to easily read the redacted medical record and enter your coding.
This is the single biggest productivity factor. Coding a chart with everything stacked on a 13-inch laptop screen is rough, but still doable.
Required software
- Internet browser (mentioned above)
- A code lookup resource of your choice (Codify, Find-A-Code, or your physical code books)
Browser settings
- JavaScript enabled
- Cookies enabled, with third-party cookies allowed for aapc.com
- Pop-up blocker set to allow aapc.com (guidelines open in new windows)
- Disable browser translation on AAPC pages, since auto-translating medical terms will mangle your answers and break code lookups
Account and session notes
- The platform autosaves, even when a session is dropped or closed mid-case. So if you need to close or leave a case before you submit for a break, this will save the coding you have already entered, and it stops the timer.
Known friction points to warn learners about
- School and hospital networks often block parts of the AAPC domain. Test access before your first scheduled study session. You may need to get IT approval if you plan to work on Practicode from a strict network.
- Do not open Practicode in multiple tabs. It seems like a great option, but it causes issues with case submission.
- Clearing site data for aapc.com fixes about 80 percent of "stuck loading" reports.
