Codie - Codify's AI Coding Assistant
Codie is AAPC’s AI coding assistant built directly into Codify. It is designed to help you find coding information, work through common coding questions, and access Codify tools without leaving your workflow.
This guide explains how to access Codie, what it can do, and how to get the most out of your conversations.
How to Open Codie
Codie is available from within Codify.
- Select the Codie icon in the upper-right corner of any Codify page.
- The Codie panel opens alongside the page you are currently viewing.
- Enter your question in the chat field and submit it.
You can continue working in Codify while keeping Codie open alongside your current page.
Minimizing Codie
Need more room on your screen? Minimize the Codie panel whenever you want it out of the way.
Your current conversation is saved and will be waiting when you reopen Codie.

Your Conversation Follows You
Your Codie conversation remains available as you navigate between pages in Codify.
For example, you can ask Codie a question, open a referenced code or guideline, navigate to another Codify tool, and continue the same conversation.
This allows you to research and work within Codify without having to restart your conversation each time you move to another page.

Starting a New Chat
When you are ready to change subjects, select New Chat in the upper-right corner of the Codie window.
Starting a new chat clears the current conversation and gives you a fresh conversation for the new topic.
We recommend starting a new chat when switching to an unrelated coding question. Separating topics can help Codie provide more focused responses.

What Can Codie Do?
Codie can help you with several common coding research and Codify workflows.
Search Codes, Modifiers, and Guidelines
Ask Codie to help locate:
- CPT® codes
- HCPCS Level II codes
- ICD-10-CM codes
- Modifiers
- Coding guidelines
- Code details and descriptors
Codie can also link you directly to referenced content within Codify so you can review the supporting information.
Run E/M Calculations
Codie can use the Codify E/M Calculator to help evaluate E/M scenarios.
For example:
I spent 42 minutes of total time on an established outpatient patient today. What E/M level does that support?
Codie can recognize that the question requires an E/M calculation and use the E/M Calculator to evaluate the information provided.
For better results, include relevant details such as:
- Whether the patient is new or established
- Place of service
- Whether code selection is based on time or medical decision-making
- Other details relevant to the encounter
The more complete your question is, the more useful Codie’s response can be.

Ask Coding Guideline Questions
Codie can help you research coding rules without requiring you to already know the applicable code.
For example:
When is modifier 25 appropriate on an E/M visit billed with a minor procedure? Give me the rule.
This tells Codie that you are looking for the applicable coding guidance rather than a check of a specific code combination.
You can make questions more specific by telling Codie exactly what you want, such as:
- “Give me the rule.”
- “Show me the full descriptor.”
- “Explain this in plain language.”
- “Compare these codes.”
- “I want the guideline, not a code check.”
- “Link me to the supporting content in Codify.”
Research Deleted or Revised Codes
Codie can also help research codes that have been deleted or revised.
For example:
What replaced the deleted office consult E/M codes like 99241?
Codie can explain the applicable coding change and help identify code families that may now apply depending on the circumstances.
When researching deleted or revised codes, include the code-set year and payer when those details are relevant.

Check NCCI Edits
Codie can check NCCI edits for both Medicare and Medicaid.
For example:
Can I bill 80053 and 80048 together, or does one bundle into the other for Medicare?
Codie recognizes the two procedure codes and specified payer type and can use the NCCI Edit Checker to evaluate the code pair.
The response can show whether an edit exists and provide the applicable edit information.
When requesting an NCCI edit check, specify the payer:
- Medicare, or MCR
- Medicaid, or MCD

Search for a Modifier
You can describe what you are trying to accomplish even if you do not know the modifier number.
For example:
Which modifier indicates a distinct procedural service? I need it to address an NCCI denial.
Codie can identify the relevant modifier and provide information about its intended use.
Remember that identifying a modifier is only the first step. The documentation and circumstances of the encounter must support the use of that modifier.
Use Codie’s links to review the supporting Codify content before making a final coding decision.

Search for a Code and Request Code Details
You can combine multiple requests in the same question.
For example:
Find the code for excision of a 2.1-centimeter benign lesion on the back, then show its full descriptor and global period.
Codie uses the information provided to help narrow the applicable code and can then return additional information such as the full descriptor and global period.
When asking Codie to identify a code, include as much relevant information as possible, such as:
- Procedure or service performed
- Anatomical location
- Diagnosis or condition
- Size or measurement
- Patient status
- Place of service
- Payer, when applicable
Providing the details that affect code selection helps Codie provide a more useful response.
Ask for the Rule Instead of a Code Check
There may be times when you want to understand a coding rule rather than determine whether two specific codes can be reported together.
Tell Codie that directly.
For example:
When is modifier 25 appropriate with a procedure? I want the rule, not a code check.
By specifying the type of answer you want, you help Codie understand the goal of your question and provide a more focused response.
Review Referenced Codify Content
When Codie references a code, guideline, calculator, or other Codify resource, it can provide a direct link to that content.
Use these links to review the supporting information within Codify.
This allows you to move from a Codie answer directly into the underlying Codify resources without having to search for the information separately.
Codie can assist with your coding research, but final code selection should always be supported by the complete medical record and applicable coding guidance.
Tips for Getting Better Results from Codie
For the best experience:
- Be specific. Include the details that could affect the answer.
- Tell Codie what you want. Ask for a rule, code search, calculation, comparison, descriptor, or edit check.
- Include the payer when relevant. This is particularly important for NCCI and payer-specific questions.
- Include the code-set year when relevant. This can be important when researching deleted or revised codes.
- Start a New Chat when changing subjects. Keeping unrelated topics separate can help Codie provide more focused responses.
- Review referenced content. Use Codie’s links to verify and explore the supporting information within Codify.
